Hi, I'am not Ukrainian, but I learn Ukrainian. You are closer with your pronunciation. But just go to English Wikipedia to the article about Kiev and listen how to pronunciate it. Western commentators have no idea how to properly pronunciate Slavic names. That is a shame.

Thanks for jumping in on this! Isn’t it interesting that we have certain sounds that we can’t seem to communicate to each other across language barriers? It’s funny that we can translate ideas, but not tonality. At least, it is to me.
